  3. Focusing the Eyepiece

  5. Before taking a measurement the 
  6. eyepiece should be focused.   Place 
  7. the occluder before the objective 
  8. and then looking through the 
  9. eyepiece the crosshair will be seen.  
  10. The eyepiece should be rotated 
  11. counter-clockwise until the crosshair 
  12. blurs, then rotated back clockwise 
  13. until the crosshair just comes into focus.

  15. If different clinicans use the ophthalmometer this should be done each time it is used.  If the same person uses it all the time the focus only needs checked periodically.  If only one practitioner uses the instrument then a set screw can be tightened to prevent the eyepiece from being accidently turned and defocused.
